About Us

Kerala Federation of the Blind is a non-profit charitable self-help organisation of the Visually Challenged, established in 1976 and registered under Travancore -Cochin Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Act 12 of 1955 as S.71/1969;recoginized and aided by Central State Governments; recipient of National Awards in 1983 and 1997 and State Awards in 1983, 1986 and 1997. Our head office situated at Thiruvananthapuram near Law College Junction Kunnukuzhi. This organisation is fully controlled and managed by the blind persons.

The general management and control of the Federation shall be vested in the Executive Committee composed of the office bearers and other elected and nominated members. The term of office of the members of the Executive Committee shall be three years. Under the leadership of the State Committee there are 14 District units and 4 Forums (for women, teachers, students and Youth.). The federation is running two schools for the visually challenged students. The first school Helen Keller Centenary Memorial Model School for the Blind, Karimpuzha Palakkad is established in 1980, recognized and aided by State Education Department. The second one was Louis Braille Memorial Model School for the Blind, Kudayathur, Idukki, established in 1997, recognized and aided by the State Education Department. The federation has Rehabilitation centres for men at Kozhikoduand for women at Pothanicadu, Eranakulam. We also had a training centre for the teachers of the Visually Handicapped at Karimpuzha Palakkad.


Kottayam District Unit

The district unit has been functioning since 1977. Our unit office and the Welfare Centre are at Thiruvatta in Aimanam Grama Panchayath. Former Hon. MP, PC Thomas was laid the foundation stone for our welfare centre in 24/10/1997 and it was inaugurated by Mr. K. Radhakrishnan, Then Hon. Minister of youth, welfare affairs, presided by Mr. Thomas Chazhikkadan Ex. MLA. In 13/05/1999. This unit office is a meeting place of our members to share their problems and exchange the ideas and views for the well-being of blind brothers in the society. At present we are conducting training programme in computer, mobility and orientation etc. in this welfare centre. All the programmes and activities of the district are managed and controlled by an elected executive committee as per the KFB Bylaw. The district Committee consists of One President, One Vice President, One Secretary, one Joint Secretary, three Executive Members. We have and Honorary Treasurer from our advisory body.

Most of our members are sidelined in the society. It is the duty of the Federation to help them in some extent to lead a better life. We are doing all the welfare activities by the support and assistance from the Government and NGOs, well-wishers and from the general public.

The reputation and fame of this federation is extended to national and international level by the hard work and dedication of our former leaders like Chettoor Unnikrishnan, Dr. Ejoseph E Vargees, P O Vargeese, George Kutty Kareparampil and T P Vasu P A Jose. Mr. George Kuttay Kareparampil was served this organisation as General Secretary from 1970 to 2003. During his tenure, he made this organisation a well established and incomparable one in this field. We have the proud to note that this eminent personality was belongs to our district.He was born and brought up at Changanacherry in Kottayam District. In respect of his valuable and uncountable service to the Federation, we honoured him by celebrating his 70th Birthday (SAPTHATHI) on 18th March 2013. We dedicated this site to our beloved Leader Mr. George Kutty Kareparampil, The former and Long Termed General Secretary of Kerala Federation of The Blind.
